Ho Ho Ho Ho Ho! … The Woody Woodpecker Song

Woody Woodpecker is not a name that anyone in the hairdressing world would expect to read about alongside the names of great stylists from the 1960s such as Vidal Sassoon, Louis Alexandre Raimon and Raymond Bessone.

First made famous in the 1940s, the red dyed woodpecker cut was revived by pop star Rihanna three years ago and, earlier this year, the style was taken on by several top footballers using a variety of different colours.

Following on from the pilot episode Knock Knock, in probably the most famous Woody Woodpecker cartoon film – The Barber of Seville (not to be confused with the opera by the same name), Woody is standing outside Tony Figaro’s barber shop near the end of World War II in hopes of getting a victory haircut.

As Tony has popped out for a short while, Woody decides to cut his own hair and those of several customers while he’s at it. In a very short time, Woody shampoos a Native American Indian causing his headdress to shrink and blow torches the head of an Italian builder, before lathering him from head to foot for a wet shave, and pinning him to the ceiling in the barber’s chair, whilst singing songs from opera.

Spurred on by his opera singing success at the hairdressers, Woody went on to release The Woody Woodpecker Song, making ample use of the cartoon character’s famous laugh. This is the only song produced for an animated film to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song. Due to the song’s popularity, Woody Woodpecker fan clubs sprung up everywhere, cinemas showed Woody matinées and boys wanted the Woody Woodpecker haircut.

As trees start to turn Woody red before shedding their autumn leaves, you may hear a greater or lesser spotted or even a green woodpecker tapping away at a tree trunk. And if you listen hard enough you may even be able to decipher the lyrics from the Woody Woodpecker song – the ladies’ first choice, with a laugh in his voice.

Ladies, why not Knock Knock on Head Quarters’ door as your first choice this autumn?

Although there is much more chance of us offering you a 60s style Bouffant, Cleopatra, Bob or Beehive than there is a victory haircut Woodpecker style with a cider rinse, you can rest assured that our customer service does not include anything to do with shrinking or lathering and we will definitely finish your hairstyle off with a blow dry not a blow torch! •
